You'll want to consider the thickness (gauge) of your strings to shape the tone and playability on the neck. Gauge refers to the thickness of the string. Usually players will refer to the size of the first string (the high E in standard tuning) when referencing their gauge preference.
Strings can be 'Plain', consisting only of a single material, like steel, nylon, or gut. 'Wound' Guitar strings are typically constructed from a steel 'core', usually in a rounded or hex shape. Round cores offer a fatter, vintage-like tone that is balanced and more flexible. Hex cores, the most common type of core, “hold” on to the windings better giving you a brighter sound, more consistent performance, and stiffer tension.
Also consider the style or genre of music, the type of chords you play, and how often you play. 'Heavier' rock sounds may require a thicker string gauge, while a thinner 'shredded' tone is possible from a lighter gauge. Thinner string gauges are typically better for beginning musicians because they are easier to bend with an uncalloused hand.
Electric Guitar Strings
Electric guitar strings can be made from a choice of cobalt, nickel, stainless steel, titanium, or bronze. Electric guitar strings take a beating, and if you settle for uncoated strings that let dirt and sweat corrode the windings, your tone will suffer. Coated guitar strings cost a little bit more but are well worth the investment.
Ernie Ball's Slinky series are an industry favourite for their great tone and longevity.
Generally, bronze strings translate to a bright tone, phosphor bronze leads to a warmer tone, steel produces a softer tone, and nylon guitar strings bring a clear and rich tone.
Elixir Nanoweb Coated Strings are considered some of the best on the market. They are the only brand to protect the entire string, coating not only the outer string surface but also the spaces between the windings. This all helps to improve lifespan and clarity in your tone. Bass Guitar Strings
Bass guitar strings are sometimes made for a particular scale length and come in short, medium, long and extra long (sometimes called super long) scale. Picking, slapping and popping - all take their toll. With uncoated bass strings you will soon lose your tone to corrosion and deadened vibrations.
D'addario's EXL range also include sets of long scale Bass Strings, so we've got you covered if you're in an emergency, or just need to stock up on the essentials!
